Loose Tiles Solutions

Need a solution for loose tiles, creaking tiles and broken grout?

The perfect solution for loose tiles, creaking tiles and broken grout is TRIM (Tile Reglue Injection Method). The more traditional method of repairing loose or lifting tiles involves complete removal of the tiles, purchasing new tiles, preparation of the area and relaying the new tiles.

Removing individual tiles however, can actually break the loose tiles and surrounding tiles. This can be an expensive and long-winded exercise, when replacements aren’t available. On the other hand, TRIM is a low-cost solution that reglues your loose or lifting tiles without removal or disturbing surrounding tiles, saving you both time and money.

TRIM is the ideal solution for a variety of problems that frequently occur with tiled areas: creaking tiles, crackling tiles, hollow sounding tiles, lifting tiles & loose floor tiles, squeaky floors and loose bathroom tiles.

Creaking Tiles

Do you have creaking tiles? Many home owners complain that when they walk over their tiled floors, they hear a creaking noise under some of the tiles. Creaking tiles can occur in any floor, newly laid or those that are years old, often being noticed in areas with heavy traffic.

The cause of creaking tiles is usually complex, and can be the result of building movement, or  by faulty installation practices. Poor substrate cleaning, the wrong glue, lack of movement joints, or generally bad trade practices, are common contributors to tile systems failure. TRIM will positively refix the tiles without removal of tiles with a strong and flexible adhesive, eliminating the problem of creaking tiles immediately.

Crackling Tiles

Crackling tiles are generally caused by the glue underneath the tiles breaking up, resulting in a crackling sound or even a loud popping noise (some people also complain of a crunching noise when you walk on the tiles). It can also be caused by the grout cracking, giving you an unsightly mess of broken grout around the tiles.

Cracked grout can often be the symptom of loose and crackling tiles. Loose tiles can eventually result in cracked tiles, broken tiles, dislodged tiles or lifting tiles. Sometimes, missing grout around the tiles is the first sign of an underlying problem, which if left for too long can lead to full tile replacement of the complete area – a costly operation.

TRIM injects a strong and flexible adhesive underneath your crackling tiles without having to remove the tiles. The result is a strong and uniform bond between the subfloor and the tiles, eliminating your crackling tiles once and for all. TRIM Injectabond is the ONLY compliant tile injection glue available. TRIM Injectabond provides a permanent and flexible bond to cater for further building movement.

TRIM Injectabond adhesive is a purpose built injection adhesive for the Tile Reglue Injection Method. TRIM Injectabond is a compliant building product, is tested to a 25 year service life and carries a 10 year manufacturers warranty. TRIM Injectabond is supported by an impressive 27 year successful track record, positively refixing loose tiles throughout Australia.

Hollow Sounding Tiles

Hollow sounding tiles are another common problem that can occur in newly laid tiles or even in older tiles. Hollow or ‘drummy tiles’ in newly laid tiles can indicate a problem with the initial installation where the adhesive bond has not been successful underneath the tiles.

Poor installation can lead not only to drummy or hollow sounding tiles, but some home owners have heard popping and cracking noises and have experienced broken grout and cracked tiles. On the other hand, in older tiles, you often find that the adhesive bond has simply broken down due to continued minor building movement, resulting in hollow or drummy tiles that will continue to worsen if not repaired.

TRIM is the ideal solution, as it repairs the adhesive bond underneath the tiles with a strong and flexible injection adhesive that will positively refix drummy or hollow sounding tiles. Cracked grout is repaired as part of the injection process.

Lifting Tiles, Loose Wall Tiles and Loose Floor Tiles

Lifting tiles, loose wall tiles and loose floor tiles can be caused by inadequate adhesion of the tiles or movement in the walls or floor. Raised tiles in wet areas such as bathrooms may harbour excess moisture as an indication of loose wall tiles or loose floor tiles. If you can see areas of dampness or mould, then your loose tiles are likely holding excessive moisture. TRIM will positively refix these loose wall tiles and loose floor tiles, reducing the available cavities beneath the tiles harbouring excessive moisture. Leaking showers, failed membranes or plumbing leaks should be investigated as a separate issue. Our highly trained and qualified TRIM team can assist your investigations in these instances

Movement in the floor is usually suspected when you have multiple lifting tiles or loose tiles, either in one area or throughout your home. Often however, the cause of lifting tiles or loose floor tiles can be compounded due to inadequate installation practices with a poorly applied adhesive, poor substrate preparation or lack of movement joints.

TRIM is a low-cost and guaranteed solution for localised repairs to lifting tiles, loose wall tiles and loose floor tiles that have been installed incorrectly, leaving your tiles securely rebonded as originally intended. Localised repairs mean that the loose wall tiles and loose floor tiles are targeted with TRIM, avoiding the costly process of full tiled area replacement. TRIM repairs do not stress or affect surrounding sound tiles or bonded tiles. TRIM localised repairs are also suitable for partially debonded tiles or part loose tiles. TRIM service offers localised tile repairs to single tiles or large areas of loose tiles.

Pyramided Tiles, Peaked Tiles or Tented Tiles

Pyramided tiles, peaked tiles or tented tiles occur when the tiles become loose from their original position and buckle – pushing against one another forming a ‘tent’ or ‘pyramid’ in the floor. The cause of these lifted tiles is usually the result of compounded minor building movement and often it is where the subfloor or walls have moved, shrunk or through a sudden temperature change or sub-soils affecting the slab.

It’s important to install required movement joints in all tiled areas, to manage building movement and reduce the event of pyramided or tented tiles occurring. Movement joints reduce the stress of minor building movement on the tiles. Dark tiles and large tiles tend to suffer more from this problem: dark tiles because they are subject to thermal movement on external decks and patios, and larger tiles because they have fewer grout lines than smaller tiles to absorb the pressure from these slight structural changes; both result in lifted tiles. Movement joints should be installed as part of the original tiling to help accommodate this build up of minor building movement and sudden change in temperature or state of the substrate.

TRIM is an ideal solution for tented tiles, peaked tiles or pyramided tiles. The TRIM service includes relieving built up stress around these peaked areas. Peaked tiles are removed, carefully relayed, surrounding loose tiles are injected using TRIM, and the tiled area saved.

Squeaky Floors

A squeaky floor is a particularly annoying problem that if ignored will eventually result in cracked tiles and broken grout. The squeaking noise often occurs in tiles that are laid over a timber substrate and can be due to the timber joists moving or the substrate not being adequately fixed to the underlying timber.

If you can access the underfloor space, then you should be able to find the cause of your squeaky floor and either fix it yourself or call in a carpenter to assess the situation. Cracked grout between tiles that have been laid over a timber subfloor usually indicates movement in your floor. Once you have fixed this problem, TRIM can be used to secure your loose tiles firmly to the subfloor, finally eliminating your squeaky floor problem.

Loose Bathroom Tiles

Loose bathroom tiles on the walls, floor and in the shower are annoying and can lead to health problems if excess moisture and free-standing stagnant water and mould build up occurs underneath the tiles. It’s best to catch these loose tiles before they dislodge or before more tiles become loose, exacerbating the problem.

Loose wall tiles and loose floor tiles in the bathroom are often caused by inadequate installation, either by not using enough adhesive or using the wrong type of adhesive; they can also be caused by an incompatibility with the waterproofing system. Compressed or squashed silicone movement joints are often a sign of loose wall tiles or loose floor tiles.

One of the first signs of loose tiles however, is often missing or broken grout and when you touch the tile, you can clearly see that it is loose and moving. TRIM is the fast and easy solution for repairing loose bathroom tiles without having to remove the tiles, giving you a strong and flexible bond between the tiles and substrate. TRIM service to your loose bathroom tiles means that fittings such as toilets, shower screens and vanities do not need to be removed. The bathroom is repaired within 1 to 2 days, compared with full bathroom renovation and re-waterproofing, which generally takes 2 weeks. The cost to rebuild a bathroom, due to faulty workmanship is 10 times the initial cost. TRIM repair solutions are a fraction of the cost of full renovation.

Why does my grout keep falling out, cracking or breaking?

There are two major causes of cracked, flaking or missing grout and they tend to depend on whether the floor has been newly laid or is an old floor. If you have a newly tiled floor and you can see cracked, missing or flaking grout, then it’s likely due to a poor installation of the tiling or grouting. Initial minor movement will break the weak bond formed due to incorrect tiling installation practices, leading to flaking grout. Poor grout mixing and installation can also result in flaking grout.

Missing or cracked grout in older floors is often due to a deterioration of the adhesive bond, through building movement that can occur over the years (making the tiles loose and causing the grout to crack). If you have eliminated floor movement as the cause of your cracked, missing or broken grout or you have already fixed this problem, or you have determined that the broken grout was caused by poor installation, TRIM is the solution in fixing your loose tiles. Low cost, low mess, low fuss. Guaranteed, compliant injection adhesives with product warranty. Qualified and trained TRIM service providers.
